Mind-Based Stress Reduction

Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, internationally known writer, scientist and clinician in the fields of mind/body medicine, integrative medicine, lifestyle change and self-healing, will give several presentations at The University of Iowa October 9 and 10. Kabat-Zinn will speak on "Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction 101: Health, Healing, and Making the Most of Our Moments" at 12:30 p.m. Monday, October 9, room 2189 of the UI Medical Education and Research Facility (MERF). Kabat-Zinn will read from his latest book "Coming to Our Senses: Healing Ourselves and the World Through Mindfulness" and will participate in a book signing as part of the "Live From Prairie Lights" series on radio station WSUI AM 910. The broadcast will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, October 9, in Buchanan Auditorium, UI John Pappajohn Business Building. On Tuesday, October 10, Kabat-Zinn will address, "What is My Job on the Planet? Mindfulness and the Adventure of Work," at 9 a.m. in room 2189 of MERF. All these events are free an open to the public. At 11 a.m. Tuesday, he will discuss clinical applications of mindfulness-based interventions in medicine and psychiatry as part of the UI Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds sessions at UI Hospitals and Clinics. Kabat-Zinn is an emeritus professor of medicine and the founding director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. His books "Full Catastrophe Living," and "Wherever You Go, There You Are" have been published in more than six languages. His most recent book, "Coming to Our Senses," uses his scientific knowledge, personal anecdotes, and working experiences at his clinic to illustrate healing possibilities. He also co-authored "Everyday Blessings," about mindful parenting, with his wife, Myla Kabat-Zinn, and created the CD program, "Meditation for Optimum Health," with renowned physician and writer Andrew Weil. Kabat-Zinn's research has contributed significantly to modern health care in mind/body interactions for healing. His work also holds a crucial role in various clinical applications of mindfulness meditation training for people with chronic pain or stress-related disorders. The Center for Mindfulness Stress Reduction Program, the subject of Kabat-Zinn's book, "Full Catastrophe Living," has been featured on PBS, "Oprah," "Dateline NBC," ABC's "Chronicle," and in various national print media. The UI Hospitals and Clinics Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program in the Department of Psychiatry/UI Behavioral Health is modeled after Kabat-Zinn's center at the University of Massachusetts. Kabat-Zinn received his PhD in molecular biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971 where he studied under Salvador Luria, Nobel Laureate in physiology and medicine. |
