A national leader in breast imaging and women's health will present a free community seminar on digital mammography and breast cancer detection Monday, October 9, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. the Holiday Inn Conference Center, 1220 First Avenue, Coralville. The seminar's presenter, Laurie Fajardo, MD, UI Hospitals and Clinics radiologist and professor and head of the Department of Radiology at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, served as the lead UI investigator for a recent national digital mammography study. Breast cancer is the number one diagnosed cancer for women in Iowa. Nearly 30 percent of all tumors diagnosed in women last year were breast cancers. New tools are helping discover breast cancer earlier and in more difficult to diagnose populations. A recent study showed that digital mammography performed better than standard mammography in women under age 50, pre- and peri-menopausal women, and women with dense breast tissue. Learn about breast cancer screening and what earlier detection means in fighting this disease. Also, learn about a new clinical trial using digital tomosynthesis, the "next generation" of screening, which creates a three-dimensional X-ray image of the breast. Fajardo was recently ranked by her peers as the second-leading women's imaging specialist in the United States, according to Medical Imaging magazine. She is also recognized as one of the Best Doctors in America. Advance registration for this free community seminar is encouraged. For more information or to register, call 319-384-8442 or 800-777-8442. This seminar is part of the Health for Your Lifetime series presented as a public service by UI Hospitals and Clinics. |
