Specialists at University of Iowa Children's Hospital will help lead a coalition that will teach low-income families and their children how to make healthy choices in an effort to reduce the rate of childhood obesity.

The project, called Kohl's WILD Kids, began during a special event October 24 the Iowa City Public Library.

University of Iowa Children's Hospital, Kohl's Department Stores, Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County and the American Academy of Pediatrics Iowa division are joining forces to advance WILD (Wellness Is Learning and Doing).

"Kohl's is committed to playing an active role in the communities we serve," said Julie Gardner, senior vice president and chief brand officer of Kohl's Department Stores. "We're proud of the partnerships we've created across the country, and we are excited to join University of Iowa Children's Hospital, Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County and the American Academy of Pediatrics in this endeavor."

Approximately 2,200 children throughout Johnson County will benefit from WILD. The effort will engage children and their families in healthy snacking and fitness activities. Throughout the year-long project children will learn how to make good dietary choices and to develop an active lifestyle.
