Mix 96 Radiothon and Wal-Mart and SAM'S Club Stores
Activities Benefit University of Iowa Children's Hospital

Mix 96 to Broadcast Children's Miracle Network Radiothon
Davenport radio station Mix 96 (KMXG-FM, owned by Clear Channel Radio) will host its second annual MIX for Kids radiothon to benefit University of Iowa Children's Hospital within University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Thursday and Friday, November 16 and 17.

MIX air staff members Pat Leuck, Polly Peterson, Debbie McFadden and Ron Evans will lead the Mix 96 team during the live broadcast from the Atrium Lobby on the hospital's first level from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Valley Bank is the event's presenting sponsor.

"We had a very powerful, moving experience during our first radiothon last year," Peterson says. "We're very much looking forward to coming back this year to meet more wonderful kids and their families."

"As the state's only comprehensive pediatric center, we serve many children from the MIX 96 listening area," says Michael Artman, MD, Physician-in-Chief of University of Iowa Children's Hospital.

"We treat more than 5,000 kids each year from Scott County, more than 2,200 from Rock Island County and about 2,300 from Clinton County. Most of these children have complicated medical problems. We provide advanced specialty treatment and then develop a care plan with the referring provider so that follow-up care can take place back home.

"Patients who need hospitalization benefit from our new child-friendly, state-of-the art hospital facilities and family-centered care programs that are designed to have parents close by throughout the hospital stay," Artman says.

MIX 96 Program Director Jim O'Hara said, "Our station is committed to supporting Quad City families, and working with University of Iowa Children's Hospital and Children's Miracle Network is a perfect way to help fulfill that commitment."

Children's Miracle Network has a membership of 170 children's hospitals nationwide. Headquartered in Salt Lake City, UT, Children's Miracle Network is an international, non-profit organization dedicated to generating funds and awareness programs to benefit children treated at children's hospitals throughout the United States and Canada. Children's Miracle Network's hallmark is that locally generated donations stay in the local area to benefit patients at the local children's hospital. Children's Miracle Network also includes 75 corporate sponsors, 200 television stations and more than 135 radio stations.

University of Iowa Children's Hospital is the state's longest-serving children's hospital. Each year, University of Iowa Children's Hospital records more than 100,000 clinic visits and some 7,000 inpatient admissions.

Children's Miracle Network Fundraiser Opens at Wal-Mart, SAM's Club Stores
Leaders with University of Iowa Children's Hospital at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics—the region's Children's Miracle Network hospital—announced that Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. will kick off a fundraising campaign during November.

Wal-Mart and SAM'S Club locations across the region will sell pumpkin miracle balloon icons at each register to raise funds for hospitalized children cared for at University of Iowa Children's Hospital. Shoppers checking out at Wal-Mart or SAM'S Club can purchase a pumpkin miracle balloon for $1 to make a difference for hospitalized pediatric patients.

Organizers say these dollars will add up and send a powerful message of hope to patients and families during the most generous time of the year. All of the funds generated through the efforts of Wal-Mart and SAM'S Club during this campaign, as well as throughout the year, will stay in the local area and benefit children from across this region when they receive care at University of Iowa Children's Hospital.

Children's Miracle Network and Wal-Mart became partners more than 19 years ago. Nationally, Wal-Mart has raised more than $300 million for Children's Miracle Network hospitals across the United States and Canada. Regionally, Wal-Mart stores in Iowa, southern Minnesota, western Illinois, and northern Missouri have raised $6.4 million dollars for University of Iowa Children's Hospital over the past 18 years.

Each year, University of Iowa Children's Hospital records more than 100,000 clinic visits and some 7,000 inpatient admissions.

"As the state's only academic medical center, we treat the sickest of children," said Michael Artman, MD, Physician-in-Chief for University of Iowa Children's Hospital. "The funds raised by Wal-Mart and SAM'S Club benefit University of Iowa Children's Hospital in many ways. We deeply appreciate their commitment to children and families."

Support from Wal-Mart and SAM's Club associates helped build a pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratory in 2000, added a million dollars toward a major renovation of the second-floor pediatric inpatient unit in 2002 and provided a 16-bed guesthouse in 2005 inside the hospital for families to stay close to their children.

Children's Miracle Network, an alliance of premier hospitals for children, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children's hospitals across North America. Each year, the 170 Children's Miracle Network hospitals provide the finest medical care, life-saving research and preventative education to help millions of children overcome diseases and injuries of every kind.

University of Iowa Children's Hospital is the state's longest-serving children's hospital. For more information about how you can support University of Iowa Children's Hospital and the Children's Miracle Network cause, contact Lisa Baum at 319-335-8484.
