University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics faculty and staff continued their active record of service to Iowans in 2006. The record of service for fiscal year 2005-2006 shows UI Hospitals and Clinics admitted 27,282 acutely ill patients during the year. A total of 1,609 newborns came into the world at University of Iowa Children's Hospital within UI Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Clinic visits to UI Hospitals and Clinics, UI Community Medical Service (UI Family Care) locations and UI Health Care outreach sites totaled 856,848, an increase from 851,220 the year before. "Our faculty and staff are truly living up to our standards of providing innovative care, excellent service and exceptional outcomes," said Donna Katen-Bahensky, director and chief executive officer of UI Hospitals and Clinics. "I can say without hesitation that all of us expect even bigger achievements in 2007." Surgeons at Iowa's only academic medical center performed 21,008 major surgical operations, compared to 20,820 a year ago. That figure includes 391 organ and tissue transplants, an increase of 51 from the 2005 figure. Specialists also performed 73,959 minor surgeries. Other major developments include:
