Everett is the associate director, chief nursing officer and director of Nursing Services and Patient Care at UI Hospitals and Clinics. She also is the associate dean for clinical practice at the UI College of Nursing. Selected as the AONE president through a national membership online vote, Everett's one-year term will conclude on Jan. 1, 2008. She will serve as the group's past-president throughout 2008.

The vision and mission of AONE is to shape the future of health care through innovative nursing leadership and to represent nurse leaders who improve health care. As AONE president, Everett will lead nursing executives throughout the country in collaborative efforts to improve health care on a national level.

Everett has directed the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care as well as a number of hospital-based departments at UI Hospitals and Clinics since 1999. During her tenure, the hospitals and clinics received the prestigious Magnet Hospital Designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. UI Hospitals and Clinics was the first hospital in Iowa to earn the international award that recognizes excellence in nursing practice.

Everett has also served as treasurer of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), and as treasurer of the STTI Foundation Board. She was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in 2005.
