Experts from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics will discuss heart failure and its treatment options at a special community program Saturday, February 24, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Holiday Inn Conference Center, 1220 First Avenue, Coralville.
Cardiologists John Chase, MD, and Frances Johnson, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon David Helman, MD, and registered dietitian Marti Bradbury will present, "Treating Heart Failure Today and Tomorrow."
Heart failure affects nearly five million Americans. How do we effectively manage this condition? How will we treat this disease in the future? In this second annual symposium on heart failure, the experts from the UI Cardiomyopathy Program will answer these questions and more.
The seminar discussion will include the following topics:
- Heart Failure Terms and Tests: Heart failure patients go through a series of tests. What do the tests mean and how are they used?
- Heart Pumps: Heart pumps, or ventricular assist devices, offer a more fulfilling life for thousands of patients. Hear how these pumps work and what they may do for patients in the future.
- Can You Mend a Broken Heart? Presenters will give an update on stem cells and regenerative therapies.
- Extreme Recipe Makeover: Heart failure patients need to cut their intake of salt. Learn how to get more flavor with less salt.
Light refreshments will be served. Participants also are invited to stay after the program for the opportunity to talk with physicians, nurses and heart failure patients.
