Loras College Dance Marathon Exceeds Goal
Students at Loras College in Dubuque raised $37,127 April 14 during their second Dance Marathon event to benefit patients and their families at University of Iowa Children's Hospital in Iowa City.
Jim Collins, president of Loras College, attended the event and helped encourage the dancers. "I was very impressed with these young leaders and their commitment to this very important cause," Collins said. "We can all be very proud of them and the legacy they have helped create."
More than 120 students danced for 12 hours beginning at 8 p.m. A total of 15 families from the Dubuque area whose children were treated at UI Children's Hospital also attended. Each dancer paid a $25 entry fee and raised at least $75 through writing letters and other forms of fundraising.
Alicia Mireles, Loras College Dance Marathon chairperson, added, "It was an exhausting, challenging experience, but the patients and their families helped motivate us to keep going, and I know that our students will be very excited to dance again next year."
Last year, the Loras College Dance Marathon raised more than $23,000.
Proceeds fund the vending machine program at UI Children's Hospital. For every child who stays the night in the hospital, his or her family receives two tokens for use in special vending machines that dispense nutritious meals, reducing the cost of the family's hospital stay.
