Healthcare Recognitions

National Hospital Week Recognizes Care and Trust

During National Hospital Week, May 6 through 12, UI Hospitals and Clinics will recognize the many gifted faculty, staff and volunteers who embody this year's theme–Care You Count On...People You Trust.

The care and compassion at UI Hospitals and Clinics comes from our people—their kindness, talent, and attention to family-centered care. The staff reaches out and touches the lives of patients and families, providing care everyone can count on, while making what they do more than just a job—it is a calling.

Because of this philosophy, our faculty and staff are people everyone can trust to provide the best possible care for patients and their families. Each and every person is an important part of our success and of our future.

UI Hospitals and Clinics administration and Service Leadership Council has coordinated activities for faculty, staff, and volunteers throughout the week, including a hospital-wide celebration and activities in individual departments. Changing displays in the main lobby will recognize physicians, nurses, service leaders, and community service activities.

Staff members who received 2006 Above and Beyond the Call of Duty (ABCD) awards will be honored at a reception Tuesday May 8. Special recognition will be given to the 2006 CEO Award winners and employees who received two or more ABCD awards.

Nursing: A Profession and a Passion

Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that embraces dedicated people with varied interests, strengths, and passions because of the many opportunities the profession offers. UI Hospitals and Clinics will recognize its more than 1,500 nurses who provide care in clinics, operating rooms, intensive care units—any place a patient needs care—during National Nurses Week May 6 through 12, Florence Nightingale's birthday. The theme this year is "A Profession and a Passion."

Ten of this year's "100 Great Iowa Nurses" come from the University of Iowa, nine from UI Hospitals and Clinics and one from UI Student Health Service. These nurses match their knowledge of today's complex technologies with compassionate care. They range from nurses beginning their careers to recognized leaders in their fields of expertise. They work as a team with their colleagues across UI Hospitals and Clinics as they focus on quality, safe, patient-focused care.

The Iowa Nurses' Association, Iowa Nurses Foundation, and the University of Iowa College of Nursing have partnered since 2005 to create this list to celebrate nursing by honoring 100 nurses from around the state each year.

UI Hospitals and Clinics was the first hospital in Iowa to receive the prestigious Magnet award in nursing—the only recognized national designation for excellence in nursing practice. It is awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center when a facility demonstrates through written documents and on-site visit that it meets criteria considered exemplary in the provision of nursing care.
