Cedar Rapids Kernels Honor
Heart Transplant Recipient

A man who received a heart transplant in 2004 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics was featured during the Homerun for Life event at July 23 Cedar Rapids Kernels baseball game. Brian Kimm, 46, of Blairstown, Iowa was honored at the game by the Kernels.

Kimm was told in early 2002 that he needed a heart transplant. Specialists with UI Heart and Vascular Center at UI Hospitals and Clinics treated him with advanced technology called a left ventricular assist device. It helps the heart pump blood and can help patients survive until a donor heart becomes available.

In 2004, Kimm learned that a matched donor had been found. Following the heart transplant, Kimm battled kidney failure for 10 days. He credits the physicians, nurses, and staff of UI Hospitals and Clinics for helping him pull through that difficult challenge.

"They have the best staff in the United States as far as I'm concerned," Kimm said. "They were very caring. They've become like family to us."

During the Homerun for Life event, Kimm circled the bases at Veterans Memorial Stadium as his story of survival was shared with the Kernels' fans.
