UI Children's Hospital Researcher Earns
Prestigious International Honor

A child behavior specialist and researcher in the Center for Disabilities and Development at University of Iowa Children's Hospital recently received a distinctive designation held by fewer than 50 people in the world.

The Association for Behavior Analysis International named David Wacker, PhD, as a fellow, the highest recognition of professional contribution in the field of behavioral analysis.

"This is only the fourth year that they have awarded the fellow distinction, so I am very surprised and honored to have been selected as a fellow. I am gratified that our work in the clinics has been so well received," Wacker said.

Wacker's clinical interests focus on the outpatient assessment of severe problem behaviors displayed by children and adults with developmental disabilities. His research interests include functional analysis, functional communication training, proactive treatment of severe problem behaviors, early parental intervention for severe problem behaviors in home settings, and stereotypical behavior.

"I am delighted that Dr. Wacker has received this much-deserved honor," said Michael Artman, MD, physician-in-chief at UI Children's Hospital. "It is certainly worthy recognition of his commitment to caring for children and adolescents with severe behavioral problems, which is truly remarkable."

UI Children's Hospital serves children and their families at its main campus in Iowa City and satellite clinics in communities throughout Iowa. A 165-bed "hospital within a hospital," UI Children's Hospital benefits from the sophisticated services and comprehensive resources of UI Hospitals and Clinics. Child magazine ranks UI Children's Hospital among the top 20 children's hospitals in the nation.
