Grossology-The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body

Here's your chance to learn all about the crusty, scaly, gross things, the slimy, mushy, oozy, gross things, and the stinky, smelly, gross things that are part of your body.

It's all part of the Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body exhibit at the Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines. Locally sponsored by University of Iowa Children's Hospital, the traveling exhibit runs from September 29 through January 6.

Now you can explore how your body produces all that mushy, stinky, oozy stuff.

  • Visit the Vomit Center and learn the many reasons humans vomit.
  • Stop by the Toot Toot Exhibit to create different sounds that replicate the physics of gas.
  • Learn how food is digested as it passes through the gastrointestinal system by watching an X-ray machine.
  • Find out what causes runny noses, sneezes and allergies with Nigel Nose-it-All. Microscope stations at this exhibit also feature things that cause runny noses.
  • Play surgery and attempt to remove organ parts from a body without touching the sides of the patient.
  • Match the body odors with the correct area of the body: arm pits, lower intestine, mouth, or feet.

Based on the best selling children's book, Grossology, the exhibit uses imagination and sophisticated hands-on exhibits to present a frank, thorough, yet light-hearted examination of various unappealing bodily functions and medical conditions.

"We are excited to bring this fun and unusual exhibit to the children of the state of Iowa. It puts science and the human body on levels that make them fun for children," says Michael Artman, MD, Physician-in-Chief, UI Children's Hospital.

IMAX Film Presentation—The Human Body

The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine is the local sponsor for the IMAX film, "The Human Body" at the Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines. The film is part of the Science Center exhibit on the human body that runs from September 29 through January 6.

The Human Body tells the everyday story of life in a way never before seen:

  • The speeding impulse of a brain cell racing at 250 miles-per-hour
  • The quivering dance of hairs found in our ear, so small that 10 bunched together would still be thinner than one strand of hair from our head
  • The 100-mile trek of a red blood cell, only thousandths of an inch in size, through our vast, tangled network of veins, arteries and capillarie
  • The miraculous genetic fusion of parental DNA that signals the beginning of a unique new life

In astonishing detail, the giant-screen film presents a slice of our life—a look at the daily biological processes that go on without our control and often without our notice.

Fun for Adults, Too

The Science Center of Iowa and The University of Iowa will host a series of special events this fall for children of all ages.

  • Dinner at the Dome will pair a reception in the exhibit and a five-course meal with a presentation by a UI Carver College of Medicine faculty member and a screening of the IMAX film "The Human Body." Date to be announced
  • University of Iowa Day at the Science Center of Iowa will offer family-oriented experiences for Hawkeye alumni, friends, and neighbors of all ages to experience the exhibit and IMAX film. Saturday, October 20
  • Science Center of Iowa After 5 will feature a different twist on an intriguing topic (Science of Love or Science of Brewing Beer, for example) that encourages exploration of the fascinating science. Wednesday, November 14.
