Deemed Status of UI Hospitals and Clinics Restored

University of Iowa Health Care leaders announced October 18 that they have received notice from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) regional office in Kansas City, MO, that CMS has restored the deemed status of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic health center.

The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (IDIA) conducted a full survey of UI Hospitals and Clinics at the request of CMS in August 2007.

The IDIA completed an unannounced return visit on October 15 and 16, 2007, to confirm that staff had complied with the hospital’s corrective action plan.

The CMS response arrived by fax October 17. Regaining deemed status means that CMS now considers UI Hospitals and Clinics to meet federal regulations through its accreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
