A University of Iowa pediatrician is the president-elect of an international professional organization dedicated to advancing research that benefits the health of infants.

Jeffrey Segar, MD,  director of the Division of Neonatology at UI Children's Hospital, pediatrician and professor of pediatrics with the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine,  will be the first UI faculty member to serve as president of the Perinatal Research Society.

Segar will begin his term as president at the society's 2008 meeting and will plan its 2009 meeting and preside over it.

The Perinatal Research Society was established in 1969 to foster scientific interchange among people whose research interests are in perinatal medicine and developmental biology. The active membership is limited to 165 scientists, 55 from each of three disciplines: obstetrics, pediatrics, and the basic sciences.

"The election of Dr. Segar to this important post is a testament to his professional standing," said Michael Artman, MD, physician-in-chief of UI Children's Hospital. "This represents a distinctive honor not only for him but for the Division of Neonatology, the Department of Pediatrics, and the University of Iowa."
