Project Art at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City received a $4,800 matching grant from the Iowa Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts that will be used to create a four-panel art installation, titled "Illuminated Voices."
The project will involve patients, staff, and visitors in creating a visual representation of the experience of healing.
Nationally recognized calligrapher and adjunct professor at the UI Center for the Book, Cheryl Jacobsen, will use the words, poems, and phrases from patients, family, and staff to create the new work of art. Jacobsen also will facilitate four workshops in February at the hospital. Participants will learn the basics of calligraphy and create their own artwork.
The calligraphy and artwork created in the workshops will be displayed on the eighth floor of the John Colloton Pavilion in the temporary exhibit space.
Project Art will hold personal interviews with patients, visitors, and staff who wish to participate and share their thoughts on the healing process. The thoughts expressed in the interviews will be used by the artist to create the four panels.
"Illuminated Voices" will be completed and installed in July 2008 in the skywalk on the third floor between the John Pappajohn Pavilion and the Pomerantz Family Pavilion. |
