Community Seminar Focuses on Hardening of the Arteries

Experts from UI Heart and Vascular Center will present an overview of peripheral arterial disease, or hardening of the arteries, and what is being done to diagnose and treat it. The free community seminar will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center, 1220 First Aveenue, Coralville.

Jamal J. Hoballah, MD, director of vascular surgery, and Jean Hogan, MSN, ARNP, will present "Hardening of the Arteries: What Can I Do?"

The discussion will include:

  • Signs and symptoms
  • How peripheral arterial disease is diagnosed
  • New clinical research and advancements

Pain or numbness in one's feet, non-healing sores on the feet, and considerable pain in the calves or other leg muscles when walking are all symptoms of peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

PAD is common, and diagnosis is crucial. Some people experience mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, while others develop more severe symptoms and complications in the legs or other parts of the body, including stroke or heart attack. However, restoration or improvement of blood circulation and prevention of amputation are usually achievable. Clinical research is being done that may potentially regenerate new blood vessels.

Part of the "Health for Your Lifetime" series, this program is presented as a public service by UI Hospitals and Clinics.
