April 27 to May 3 is National Volunteer Week and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics salutes its volunteer force for their contributions throughout the year.
"Our volunteers are just an amazing group of people. Every single one of them has the chance to improve the patient experience here every day," says Jean Reed, director of Volunteer Services.
Volunteer Services has benefited from the generosity of volunteers for more than 35 years. Last year, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics volunteers donated 96,004 hours of service—the financial value of these services would be well over $1.8 million.
Last year, Volunteer Services provided more than $18,000 in scholarships to high school and college student volunteers and the volunteers themselves contributed more than $174,000 to support programs and services that benefit patients and their families at UI Hospitals and Clinics last year.
Volunteer Services has more than 100 volunteer positions to choose from including:
- Delivering flowers
- Visiting patients
- Working at the circulation desk in our Patients' Library
- Spending time in waiting areas, and inpatient and outpatient units
- Working in office settings.
- Rooftop Café
- Wild Rose Gift shop
Volunteer Services offers an eight-week summer Junior Volunteer program (ages 14 to 18) that exposes students to careers in the health sciences, as well as fostering service values.
Our junior and college volunteers receive rewarding educational experiences, and our community volunteers know they've enhanced the quality of life for our patients and their families.
