Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at The University of Iowa has received a national award for providing superior care to patients and families affected by cancer.
The Program Review Subcommittee of the Commission on Cancer (CoC) named Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center as a recipient of its Outstanding Achievement Award.
Established in 2004 by the American College of Surgeons, the CoC Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) honors cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. A facility receives the OAA following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a commendation level of compliance with seven standards representing the full scope of the cancer program (cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach and quality improvement).
In addition, a facility receives a compliance rating for the remaining 29 standards. Sixty-seven cancer programs received the OAA as a result of surveys performed in 2007. This number represents approximately 15 percent of the programs surveyed during this period.
Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is Iowa's only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center. NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers are recognized as the leaders in developing new approaches to cancer prevention and cancer care, conducting leading edge research and educating the public about cancer.
