University of Iowa Health Care Announces Project Architect

University of Iowa Health Care leaders today announced that the Iowa City office of Heery International has been selected as architect for proposed additions and renovations to UI Hospitals and Clinics.

The plans include building a new critical care tower and children's hospital.

Construction is slated to begin in May 2010 with an expected completion date of September 2013. The towers and a subsequent renovation of patient-care areas are projected to cost between $700 and $850 million over the coming decade.

UI Health Care leaders say the physical plant needs modernization. The project will enhance access and convenience for patients and their families, making the center more "user-friendly."

One of the largest design firms in the nation, Heery International is recognized for the diversity of its designs. In addition to its substantial work on hospital and health care facilities, the firm's award-winning design expertise includes both new construction and renovation of existing buildings for aviation, commercial, industrial, institutional, higher education, criminal justice, and sports facilities in the public and private sectors. Staff from Heery's Iowa City office will manage the overall project planning and construction process.

UI Health Care officials also will hire a master planning architectural firm and a children's hospital architect.
