Jean Robillard, MD, University of Iowa vice president for medical affairs, announced July 15 the selection of Kenneth P. Kates as the new Associate Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, pending approval by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.
UI Hospitals and Clinics is the state’s only comprehensive academic medical center. The 684-bed teaching hospital employs more than 7,700 people and has an annual budget of approximately $768 million.
“Ken Kates is ideally qualified to lead this great institution,” Robillard said. “I look forward to working with him on our University of Iowa Health Care team to continue our proud tradition of providing high quality health care to our patients.”
Kates is currently a consultant with Alvarez and Marsal in Chicago, IL. He has more than 30 years of experience in academic health care, including numerous positions at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System, most recently as their Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
Kates will begin working at UI Hospitals and Clinics on September 15. His daughter, one of his two children, attends The University of Iowa. He will receive an annual salary of $540,000.
“I feel very fortunate to be coming to such a great hospital and a tremendous community,” Kates said. “My family saw firsthand the skill and compassion of the staff here when my daughter had to visit the Emergency Treatment Center. As an observer, I witnessed how Iowans pulled together during the flooding. I’m extremely honored to be selected to lead one of the finest teaching hospitals in the nation.”
