Kuperman Appointed to Ida P. Haller Chair in Child Psychiatry

Samuel Kuperman, MD, professor of psychiatry at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and a physician with UI Children's Hospital, has been appointed to a five-year term to the Ida P. Haller Chair in Child Psychiatry.

The chair was created in 2001 by gifts to the UI Foundation from the Haller Trust that upgraded a previously endowed professorship. Haller, a high school economics teacher from Davenport, designated her entire estate to create the trust. Haller, who died in 1971, advocated throughout her life for increased research, teaching, and clinical support of child psychiatry.

Kuperman is director of the UI Division of Child Psychiatry and assistant director of the Child Psychiatry Residency Training Program. His research interests include the psychopathology of children of parents with alcoholism, genetics and alcoholism, genetics of attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder, and biological differences between children with hyperactivity and those without the condition.

"The Haller Chair can help advance the much-needed research in child psychiatry and will hopefully lead to improved patient care. Dr. Kuperman, given his past accomplishments and ongoing research, is an excellent choice for the appointment," said Robert G. Robinson, MD, professor and head of psychiatry at the UI Carver College of Medicine, who also holds the Paul W. Penningroth Chair of Psychiatry.

Kuperman earned both a bachelor's degree in psychology and a medical degree from the UI. He also completed residencies in adult and child psychiatry at the UI. He joined the UI faculty in 1983.

Miller Appointed to Kathrine Griffin Professorship

Del Miller, PharmD, MD, professor of psychiatry at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and a physician with UI Hospitals and Clinics, has been appointed to a five-year term to the Kathrine Griffin Professorship in Schizophrenia and Major Mental Illness.

The professorship was established through a gift made to the UI Foundation by the trust of Kathrine (Smith) Griffin, who earned a bachelor's degree from the UI in 1931. Griffin, whose husband, Robert, also a UI alumnus, wanted to advance research for the improved diagnosis and cure of schizophrenia. A native of Logan, Griffin died in 1992.

Miller devotes clinical and research expertise to the neurobiology and treatment of schizophrenia, which affects about 1 percent of the U.S. population. His current research includes comparing newer and older medications to treat people with schizophrenia and examining the role of genetics on clinical response to medication, with the goal of improving the treatment of the condition. Miller has published more than 90 peer-reviewed research papers and serves as a reviewer for more than a dozen professional publications in his field.

"We're fortunate that Kathrine Griffin had the foresight to support schizophrenia research. Schizophrenia is a devastating, life-altering disease, and while treatment options have improved over the past 30 years, significantly more research is needed. Dr. Miller is the ideal choice to hold the Griffin professorship and work toward even better therapies," said Robert G. Robinson, MD, professor and head of psychiatry at the UI Carver College of Medicine, who also holds the Paul W. Penningroth Chair of Psychiatry.

Miller earned a bachelor of science degree from the UI College of Pharmacy. He also holds a doctorate of pharmacy degree from the University of Kentucky and a medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. In addition, he completed a residency in hospital and clinical pharmacy at University of Kentucky Hospitals and Clinics and a residency in psychiatry at UI Hospitals and Clinics. He was a postdoctoral fellow in mental health at the UI prior to joining the UI faculty in 1992.
