UI Hospitals and Clinics Volunteers Receive Governor’s Volunteer Award

Seven volunteers from the UI Hospitals and Clinics Volunteer Services and the Preemie Project were honored at the Governor’s Volunteer Award ceremonies in Ottumwa.

“All volunteers are helping to build One Iowa by freely giving their time and talents to serve the public good,” said Governor Chet Culver. “Lt. Governor Judge and I are honored to have this opportunity to personally thank this year’s award recipients for donating their time in countless ways to improve communities across the state. We look forward to continuing our work with these dedicated Iowans so that together, we can build an unlimited future for all.”

Iowa consistently ranks in the top 10 states in the nation for the percentage of adults (age 16 and above) engaged in volunteering. Recent studies show that volunteers in Iowa collectively contribute 99 million hours of service and have an economic impact of more than $1.78 billion annually. In 2008, more than 1,200 UI Hospitals and Clinics volunteers donated more than 96,000 hours. Their contribution would be valued at more than $1.8 million.

The following were honored for more than 30 yeas of volunteer service to UI Hospitals and Clinics:

  • Anita Spenler—contributed more than 8,800 hours
  • Phyllis Kelso—contributed more than 8,400 hours
  • Sherle Kasik—contributed more than 5,800 hours
  • Gwen Lowe—contributed more than 5,200 hours
  • Charlotte Wilson—contributed more than 3,500 hours
  • Edith Summers—contributed more than 2,700 hours
  • Yvonne McCabe—contributed more than 1,600 hours

The Preemie Project received a group award for their contributions. The Project comforts premature and critically ill infants and their families through gifts of handcrafted hats, booties, and blankets as well as offers solace to families grieving a loss by providing bereavement items such as handcrafted burial layettes and tokens of remembrance. This group of volunteers has recorded over 20,000 hours in service to University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
