Urology Recognition

Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Noted for Prostate Cancer Excellence

The April 2009 issue of Urology Times names Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at The University of Iowa as one of its 15 Clinical Centers of Excellence for prostate cancer.

Because these centers "rise above the pack," the editors say the institutions bring something extra to the specialty through research, patient care, and community outreach. The listing provides physicians with valuable information about where to refer challenging cases.

Richard Williams, MD, head of the UI Department of Urology, noted that collaboration among members of his department and others, including Daniel Vaena, MD, medical oncology, and Mark Smith, MD, radiation oncology, plays a pivotal role in providing excellent care to patients diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Richard Williams, MD, Receives the 2009 Hugh Hampton Young Award

The American Urological Association honored Richard D. Williams, MD, professor and head of the UI Department of Urology, for his service as an educator, researcher and medical missionary. He received the 2009 Hugh Hampton Young Award for his outstanding contributions to the study of genitourinary tract disease.

Williams received the award for his contributions to urology both as an educator and advocate for research, as well as for his work as a member of the Journal of Urology editorial board and his medical volunteering efforts in Haiti. Williams is also a Urology Times editorial consultant.
