University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Trauma Center's status as a Level I trauma center for adults has been renewed by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
The ACS also verified University of Iowa Children's Hospital as the first and only facility in the state to earn designation as a Level I trauma center for pediatrics.
"Only about two dozen institutions across the nation have earned verification as a Level I trauma center for pediatrics, which places us in very elite company," said Joel Shilyansky, MD, the pediatric trauma medical director at UI Children's Hospital. "This verification helps assure families that their children are in the best hands when they need trauma care."
Parents magazine ranks UI Children's Hospital fifth nationally for its pediatric emergency care services and also ranks UI Children's Hospital among the best children's hospitals in the U.S.
The Level I Trauma Center annually admits approximately 2,000 patients with trauma, primarily severe blunt force injuries resulting from motor vehicle collisions or falls.
Level I designation—the highest level of trauma center designation offered by the ACS—means UI Hospitals and Clinics has demonstrated that it has trained and capable personnel available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to diagnose and treat the most critically injured patients.
