Hospital Staff and Programs Receive Recognition



Buatti Named a Fellow of the American College of Radiology

John Buatti, MD, a physician with University of Iowa Health Care, was named a fellow of the American College of Radiology. The award is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to radiology through service to the profession, education or research.

Buatti, professor and head of the UI Department of Radiation Oncology and deputy director of clinical cancer care at Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, is a world-renowned radiation oncologist. His interests focus on tumors of the central nervous system and treating tumors with optically guided radiotherapy.

UI Physician to Receive Pediatric Nephrology Recognition

Jean Robillard, MD, University of Iowa vice president for medical affairs, received a 2009 Founder's Award from the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology. The honor recognizes Robillard for his unique and lasting contributions to the field of pediatric nephrology and his efforts on behalf of the society's members and in promoting specialized health care for children with kidney disease.

The society includes pediatric nephrologists and affiliated health care professionals. Its primary goals are to promote optimal care for children with kidney disease through advocacy, education and research, and to disseminate advances in clinical practice and scientific investigation.

UI Ventricular Assist Device Program Wins Award

The Ventricular Assist Device Program at the UI Heart and Vascular received recognition from the national registry that tracks information on patients who receive a mechanical blood pump to treat advanced heart failure.

The program has received a Vanguard Center Award for 100 percent regulatory compliance, with minimum enrollment of 10 patients and data compliance of 95 percent or higher. The awarding organization is the Interagency Registry of Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support.

The UI Ventricular Assist Device Program is the only one in Iowa that offers this therapy. The team is led by Frances Johnson, MD, professor of internal medicine, and includes experts in cardiovascular medicine and cardiothoracic surgery.
