UI Hospitals and Clinics Receives American Heart Association Award

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has received the American Heart Association's Get with the Guidelines -- Coronary Artery Disease Gold Performance Achievement Award.

The award recognizes the UI Heart and Vascular Center's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of cardiac care that improves the treatment of patients hospitalized with coronary disease and reduces their risk of recurrent heart attacks or death.

Hospitals receiving the award must have demonstrated for two years that at least 85 percent of eligible coronary patients are discharged following the American Heart Association's guidelines.

Under the program, hospitalized patients are started on aggressive risk-reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, aspirin, ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers. In addition, before discharge, they receive smoking cessation and weight management counseling and cardiac rehabilitation referrals.
