Woodhead Is President-Elect of National Organization
Jerold Woodhead, MD, associate professor of pediatrics in the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and director of the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at UI Children's Hospital, has been elected president-elect of the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics. His two-year term began April 29 and will be followed by a two-year term as president of the council.
Woodhead, who directs medical student education in pediatrics at the UI, has been active with the council for many years and helped develop the core curriculum for medical students in general pediatrics. In his new role he intends to continue the council's efforts to promote educational research, develop new programs and identify ways to evaluate educational activities and outcomes.
Hayreh receives Honor from Royal College of Ophthalmologists in Britain
University of Iowa faculty member Sohan Singh Hayreh, MD, PhD, has received an honorary fellowship from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in Britain for his notable contributions to ophthalmology. Hayreh received the recognition, which is the highest honor conferred by the organization, at a ceremony in London.
Hayreh is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1987, he was the first ophthalmologist to be awarded, by the University of London, the degree of Doctor of Science in Medicine, the highest degree awarded by the institution.
Hayreh, an emeritus professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences, continues to direct the Ocular Vascular Clinic and conducts research on circulation in the eye.
Rosenthal Will Lead Society of General Internal Medicine
Gary Rosenthal, MD, professor of internal medicine at the UI Carver College of Medicine and physician with UI Hospitals and Clinics, has been appointed president-elect of the Society of General Internal Medicine, an organization that is at the forefront of efforts to promote national health care reform.
Rosenthal, who also directs the UI Division of General Internal Medicine, will serve as the society's president from May 2010 to May 2011.
Rosenthal also directs the Center for Research in the Implementation of Innovative Strategies in Practice at the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center and holds an appointment in health management and policy at the UI College of Public Health.
