An overflow crowd of parents, coaches, and athletes filled the Englert Theater to hear Joe Ehrmann, former NFL player turned youth minister, high school football coach, and motivational speaker. All proceeds from the program benefit University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
Ehrmann, who stresses that winning is more than the score at the end of the game, presented his life story and discussed his program "Building Men and Women for Others."
The evening, attended by a sellout crowd of almost 800 people, raised $10,000 for UI Children's Hospital support services such as Child Life, a program that seeks to normalize the hospital experience for children by offering developmental play experiences. UI Children's Hospital, ranked as one of the best children's hospitals in the nation by Parents Magazine, is a state and national resource providing the full range of pediatric care.
The event was sponsored by Transamerica and hosted by Hawkeye Football Coach Kirk Ferentz and former Hawkeye football player and current kicker for the San Diego Chargers Nate Kaeding.
"Everything that has to do with children is an important focus for my wife, Mary, and me," said Ferentz." We support UI Children's Hospital because of the world-class care that is available here and because the people who work here are extremely compassionate and very kind."
Kaeding added that growing up in Iowa City, everyone is aware of the importance of UI Children's Hospital. "It's such a great place and they do amazing things. It is such an asset to the community."
Ehrmann is the subject of the New York Times bestseller Season of Life and was recognized by Parade Magazine as "The Most Important Coach in America."
