Three individuals and one organization with ties to University of Iowa Health Care have received a Governor's Volunteer Award.
The program honors volunteers for their contributions to Iowa's governmental agencies and nonprofit organizations.
Individual Award
Jean Frauenholtz, UI clinical research assistant, and Timothy Starner, MD, associate professor of pediatrics and asthma specialist with University of Iowa Children's Hospital, were selected by the American Lung Association for their contribution to the association.
Frauenholtz began volunteering for the American Lung Asociation in 1982 and has served on the board for 20 years. She also has served as the head nurse for the Asthma Adventure camp. Starner serves as the volunteer medical director for the Asthma Adventure camp.
Kris Westphal, a volunteer with UI Hospitals and Clinics Volunteer Services, was selected by the Iowa Board of Regents for serving nearly 1,500 hours in support of the Memories Videos program at UI Hospitals and Clinics, creating video mementos without charge for patients battling life-threatening illness.
Group Award
Cherished Portraits was selected by the Iowa Board of Regents for its program at UI Children's Hospital to provide private, caring professional portrait sessions at no charge for infants and children with life-threatening illnesses or who are facing the end of life, or for families who have lost a child. Shelia Frascht and Jane Wilkins are staff volunteer supervisors with UI Children's Hospital, and the photographers who volunteer their services are Mindy Decker, Jaimy Yoder and Nina Scott.
“The devotion of these volunteers helps Iowa consistently remain in the top 10 states in the nation for its volunteerism rate,” said Governor Culver. “Lt. Governor Judge, the First Lady, and I are honored to personally thank this year’s award recipients for donating their time, dedication, and talent to make a tremendous difference in our state.”
The most recent “Volunteering in America” study shows that volunteers in Iowa collectively contribute 89.3 million hours of service and have an estimated economic impact of $1.7 billion annually. |
