Excerpt from a January 22 Des Moines Register article:
Dr. Chris Buresh, who has been traveling regularly to Haiti for eight years, is in the town of Leogane near the epicenter of last week's earthquake. In e-mails to his wife, he described feeling anguish over performing surgery without proper anesthetics, but admiration for the perseverance he sees in residents of the ruined town.
Words from UI Health Care leaders:
Please join us in extending expressions of sympathy and in providing support to the people of Haiti and all who were deeply impacted by the tragic earthquake near Port-au-Prince this week. This disaster affects not only the Haitian members of our UI Health Care community and their loved ones, but also our many faculty and staff who have served on medical missions to Haiti and have close relationships with its people.
Some of our UI Health Care colleagues have volunteered to travel to Haiti to provide medical and humanitarian assistance. We commend those who have volunteered and thank all colleagues who are taking extra shifts and otherwise supporting these volunteer efforts.
You may assist disaster relief efforts by making an online contribution to one of the international aid and relief organizations listed at the University's Resources for Haitian Aid. These organizations have significant experience addressing natural disasters throughout the world, and many have mobilized efforts on behalf of the Haitian people.
The recovery process will be long and difficult. You may want to explore volunteer opportunities to provide assistance to the people of Haiti by serving with organizations such as the National Disaster Medical System, the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, Doctors Without Borders, the Red Cross, and others.
Faculty, staff, and students with any other questions or concerns related to the Haiti disaster can send e-mail to diversity@uiowa.edu.
