University of Iowa Dance Marathon

University of Iowa Dance Marathon

The 16th annual University of Iowa Dance Marathon will kick off at 7 p.m. February 5 in the Main Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union and continue for 24 dancing, fun-filled, memorable hours. Dance Marathon at The University of Iowa began 16 years ago and has raised $7.5 million for pediatric oncology programs at University of Iowa Children's Hospital.

The mission of UI Dance Marathon, sponsored by Children's Miracle Network, creates and sustains special projects to provide emotional and financial support and services for pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant patients and their families treated at UI Children's Hospital.

UI Dance Marathon is a student-run organization that oversees a year-long fundraiser involving more than 2,000 students, families, and friends culminating in an inspiring 24-hour event. A highlight of the event is the Best Buy room where families and dancers can play the latest electronic games.

All Dance Marathon dancers must raise $450 to participate. During the 24-hour event students go without sitting, caffeine, or sleep all to celebrate the fight against childhood cancer. Live entertainment includes a DJ and performances by local bands and Dance Marathon family speakers.

The national Children's Miracle Network, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, is an international non-profit organization dedicated to generating funds and awareness programs to benefit children treated at 170 children's hospitals throughout the United States and Canada.

UI Children's Hospital is the state's longest-serving children's hospital. More than 140,000 children receive care at UI Children's Hospital and its statewide network of outreach clinics each year.
