A University of Iowa Children's Hospital lab that specializes in ultrasound testing for pediatric and fetal heart conditions has received the highest level of reaccreditation from an independent national organization.
The Pediatric Echocardiography Laboratory was granted reaccreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL) for pediatric transthoracic, transesophageal and fetal echocardiography.
"We chose to participate in the ICAEL accreditation process because of our commitment to providing quality echocardiograms for our patients," said Candace Hooton, technical director of the Pediatric Echocardiography Lab. "Maintaining accreditation status in compliance with the commission's requirements provides us with a measurable way to assure we are providing this diagnostic testing with excellence, at industry standard."
ICAEL requires that facilities meet demanding criteria for accreditation, which goes to only the highest-quality pediatric echocardiography labs.
UI Children's Hospital is one of only a few centers in the Midwest to be accredited in all three types of echocardiography. UI Children's Hospital Pediatric Cardiology Clinic in the Quad Cities was also granted reaccreditation in pediatric transthoracic and fetal echocardiography.
Echocardiography is a non-invasive technique used to diagnose heart defects and function. The technology may be used in young children, newborns and even babies still in the womb.
Benjamin Reinking, MD, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics, directs the lab, which has been accredited by the commission since 2004.
