John Callaghan, MD, professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation with University of Iowa Health Care, was elected president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) at the academy's annual meeting in New Orleans. Callaghan will lead the 36,000-member organization for one year.
Callaghan, who holds the Dr. Lawrence and Marilyn Dorr Endowed Chair for Hip Reconstruction and Research, was elected and served a one-year term as first vice-president of the academy in 2009.
He is an internationally regarded expert in adult reconstructive surgery, specifically hip and knee replacements. He has received numerous honors and accolades, and he is the author or co-author of more than 230 peer-reviewed publications.
AAOS provides education and practice management services for orthopedic surgeons and allied health professionals, serves as an advocate for improved patient care and informs the public about the science of orthopedics.
