Free Program Discusses Sports vs. Exercise

To become good as an athlete, you need practice and focus. But to remain healthy and injury-free, you need to balance the activities that make you better with activities to improve your overall health. How much time should you spend on your sport vs. other activities?

The UI Sports Medicine experts who take care of the Hawkeyes will discuss the pros and cons of specializing in sports and exercise Monday, May 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at a free Health for Your Lifetime program at UI Sports Medicine, 2701 Prairie Meadows Drive, Iowa City.

This session will help you understand how to strike a balance between becoming the best you can be at your sport and being healthy for a lifetime. Topics will include:

  • How to balance sport specialization and cross training
  • What are the physical and psychological development issues to be aware of with kids and sports?
  • What are the gender differences in training?
  • How to setup activities to improve athletically and prevent injuries

To register, call 319-335-8886 or 877-MED-IOWA.

If you have a disability and require an accommodation to participate in this program, call 319-384-1745.
