Your Ticket to Good Health at the 2010 Iowa State Fair


Going to this year’s Iowa State Fair (Aug. 12–22) in Des Moines?

Be sure to stop by The University of Iowa booth in the southwest corner of the Varied Industries Building, where UI Health Care will be represented with a standing display featuring a patient from Mason City who benefitted from a clinical research trial.

In addition, UI Health Care faculty and staff members will be at the fair, with the following exhibits:

Saturday, Aug. 14, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Free skin cancer screenings offered by the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dermatology Department, Iowa Cancer Consortium, and the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Saturday, Aug. 14, 3 to 9 p.m. and (Repeated on Aug. 21)
All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) safety sessions sponsored by several agencies; University of Iowa Children’s Hospital will provide information to help children and their parents make safer decisions regarding ATV use.

Sunday, Aug. 15, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Gross Anatomy,” presented by the UI Carver College of Medicine, explores the human body and the processes that happen underneath our skin, and shows some of the most advanced surgical techniques available.

Thursday, Aug. 19, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m
The new UI Children’s Hospital Ambulance will be on display near the Pella Plaza.

Sunday, Aug. 22, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The National Children’s Study site in Polk County will have an informational display about the study—the largest long-term children’s health study ever done in the United States is studying how the environment and genetics affect the health and development of more than 100,000 children across the nation. Jeff Murray, MD, UI Children’s Hospital, and Rizwan Shah, MD, of Iowa Health Systems, are co-principal investigators of the study in Iowa. In addition to the UI and Iowa Health Systems, other participating organizations in Polk County include the Polk County Health Department, Visiting Nurse Services of Iowa, Mercy Medical Center, and Des Moines University.
