As the school year begins, parents and caregivers are once again reminded of the importance of safety for school-age children.
For nearly two years, UI Children's Hospital has provided the Safety Store, offering low-cost child safety products to prevent childhood injuries.
Safety Store products make home, travel, and activities safer. Personal safety items include child locators and ID tags that can even store medical information about your child. The Safe Escape program, offered as part of the Safety Store, helps make sure your special needs child can be safely and quickly evacuated in case of an emergency.
"Our mission is that safety for all children should be convenient, accessible, and affordable," says Pam Hoogerwerf, community services coordinator for Patient and Family Centered Services at UI Children's Hospital. "We provide an educational component with the safety products we make available at very affordable prices to families across the state."
Hoogerwerf describes the service as a store without walls. Customers can order safety items on-line for home delivery.
"We have basic safety products as well as products that you just can't walk into a retail store and find," she says.
Safety Education
"Safety education is the heart of our mission," Hoogerwerf adds.
Trained educators provide one-on-one instruction, demonstrations, and information related to safety topics such as:
- Bike safety
- Fire safety
- Home safety
- Water safety
- Child injury prevention
- Poison prevention
- Safety information for children with special needs
