Researchers wonder

Becky Soglin

Will vaccine prevent genital herpes?

Although genital herpes affects one in five adult Americans, nearly 90 percent of people affected by it do not know they have it.

This sobering statistic motivates physicians like Kevin Ault, M.D., to attack the disease through patient care and research.

Ault, an obstetrician/gynecologist at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, leads the UI portion of the "Herpevac Trial for Women," a joint project between GlaxoSmithKline and the National Institutes of Health.

The clinical trial will investigate a potential vaccine to prevent genital herpes.

"It has been a big year," Ault said. "This new vaccine trial is important in our ongoing efforts to advance prevention. And the FDA has approved an anti-herpes drug that prevents people with herpes from giving the disease to a partner who does not have it."
