New family-centered UI Maternity Center and intensive
care units
All the comforts of home await Iowa's moms- and
dads-to-be at a new family-friendly UI Maternity Center
opening in spring, 2004 at University of Iowa Hospitals and
Clinics.
Also on tap are sophisticated new Neonatal and Pediatric
intensive care units. Part of University of Iowa Children's Hospital,
located at UI Hospitals and Clinics, these units feature the
most advanced technologies for premature babies and very
sick newborns whose lives require highly specialized care.
The maternity center's updated pre- and post-partum rooms
will feature home-like amenities to pamper moms and keep
families and loved ones comfortable--everything from
whirlpool baths and room service to televisions and DVD
players.
Moms will be able to keep their babies with them in their
rooms.
Jennifer Niebyl, M.D., director of obstetrics and
gynecology, said each room will feature a custom home-like
bed and windows with a pleasant view to the outside. "All
the latest technologies will be unobtrusively hidden, so
it's private and relaxed," she said.
The UI Maternity Center also includes two operating room
suites for cesarean sections, five labor and delivery rooms,
and 20 post/antepartum rooms.
The former 46-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is being
replaced by a new 55-bed unit with private rooms. A
comfortable lounge with convenient amenities will be
accessible via a private staircase.
The former 12-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is being
expanded to 16 private rooms, plus a large family lounge and
educations rooms.
Both intensive care units feature highly-trained
specialists who rank among the best in their respective
professions.
"The outcome rate of our Neonatology Intensive Care Unit
ranks among the top 5 percent worldwide," said Angie Shalla,
R.N., nurse manager on the unit. "We're pretty proud of
that."
