Dementia
A University of Iowa Health Care study on the use of the medication risperidone for behavior problems in persons with memory disorders (dementia) invites eligible people to participate. The investigation focuses on the use of medicines for behavior problems, particularly studying whether it is more helpful to take medication continuously or only for a time-limited period. The study is for the treatment of behavior and does not treat the memory problem. Adults ages 40 to 95 who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and have difficulties such as hallucinations, unfounded ideas or worries, or problems with being angry, restless, nervous, and irritable for no apparent reason are eligible to participate. The person who assists the participant in decision–making, such as a family member or aide, is also invited to participate. The study involves approximately 17 visits over the course of one year, either at UI or at the participant’s residence. Participants will meet with the study team to assess specific problems and evaluate any changes in symptoms, caregiver burden, and participant’s overall health.

Urinary frequency and pelvic pain
Men and women age 18 and older with certain urinary frequency and bladder problems are invited to participate in a University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics research study on interstitial cystitis and painful bladder syndrome. The study will compare the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication to placebo (inactive substance) in reducing symptoms. Interstitial cystitis is a chronic, painful inflammatory condition of the bladder wall. People with increased daytime and nighttime urinary frequency who have never sought treatment are eligible to participate. Individuals also eligible to participate are people who have not yet received treatment for lower abdominal or pelvic pain associated with a full bladder but who do not have a urinary tract infection. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and men with a history of prostate cancer are not eligible to participate. Participants will randomly be assigned to take the study medication or a placebo, and all participants will be asked to follow an educational/training program. The study medication(s) and any blood or urine tests will be provided at no cost. Compensation for parking also is available.
