PACEMAKER: Fall 2007

A Warm Welcome

Hospital’s new  lobby offers elegant greeting to patients and visitors

“We wanted to provide a world-class welcome to a world-class facility. The physical environment here is vital to the healing of our patients and their families.”

 —Donna Katen-Bahenksy
Senior Associate VP and CEO

Picture the grand entrance to a fine hotel.

Now imagine the new main lobby—called the Patient and Visitor Service Center—at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Open since August 1, 2007, the Center offers a new level of services and amenities right inside the hospital’s revolving front doors … everything from concierge services to a baby grand player piano to gift shops and gourmet coffee.

The new facility is one of many patient-centered initiatives being launched to create a more patient-centered environment of care and comfort.

Special features within the Center include:

  • Wild Rose Gifts, an expansion of the Volunteer Services Gift Shop, offering many new items including jewelry, infants and children gifts, home décor, handbags, gifts featuring the hospital logo, and special gift baskets
  • Wild Rose Books, a partnership between Volunteer Services and the University Book Store, featuring many popular titles along with newspapers and magazines
  • Java House, a private gourmet coffee shop managed in partnership with Volunteer Services
  • New Main Information Desk
  • Larger Patient Registration area
  • Rest rooms, including family space
