University of Iowa Children's Hospital is ranked 20th nationally by Child magazine. What was your reaction?
We were humbled and very pleased. We think it is just one more validation of what we already know about our doctors, nurses, staff, volunteers, and the entire team—they’re among the very best.
Why did University of Iowa Children's Hospital rank so high?
I think it is because of our comprehensive services, exceptional outcomes, service to communities throughout Iowa, and the compassion we show for our patients and their families. It also acknowledges our strengths in pediatric research and education.
How did the magazine do its survey?
They surveyed children’s hospitals throughout the U.S. for a nine-month period. The results were based on survival rates, number of complex procedures and intricate surgeries, volume of research studies, efforts to reduce medical errors, the quality and training of the doctors and nurses, child-friendliness, support for families, and community involvement. We do very well in all those areas.
Do referrers play a role in your success?
Absolutely! They play an enormous role. In a very real sense, we partner with them in making the best possible care available to children. I believe they have great trust in our specialized expertise.
What does this ranking say to the people of Iowa?
That this state has a children’s hospital where the highest levels of specialized pediatric care are available. I think every Iowan can take pride in knowing that our children’s hospital takes a back seat to none.
