PACEMAKER: Winter 2007

'New Era in Health Care'

World-class Research Institute
A planned new University of Iowa Institute for Biomedical Discovery will house sophisticated laboratories and office space dedicated to cross-disciplinary research in biomedical and life sciences, involving scientists from across the entire campus.

The $120 million project is part of a larger University effort to bring together scientists from multiple disciplines to pursue research leading to:

  • New treatments for patients
  • New educational opportunities for students
  • New jobs and business partnerships that benefit Iowa's economy.

Groundbreaking ceremonies were conducted in September 2007, with construction expected to begin in late 2008 or early 2009.

"Today is not just about a new building, today is about hope," said Iowa Gov. Chet Culver. "With this new facility, we'll be able to help countless people around the globe who suffer from illness and disease by turning their hope for a cure into a reality."

The Institute will be built next to the UI Carver Biomedical Research Building on the health sciences campus.

$33 million award supports ‘bench to bedside' research in the Hawkeye State
Picture this exciting scenario: Iowa's communities, health care systems, and universities partnering to seek exciting new medical discoveries that promise a healthier future.

That's the promise of a five-year, $33.8 million grant—the second largest research award in University of Iowa history—from the National Institutes of Health. The award supports UI's Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, a program for laboratory discoveries that lead to patient-based studies in clinical settings.

"This award marks a new era in health care in Iowa," says Jean Robillard, MD, vice president for medical affairs and dean of the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. "New therapies based on research discoveries will be more readily available to Iowans through their hospitals and physicians."

UI President Sally Mason, PhD, says the Institute will:

  • Establish a network of providers to help conduct clinical trials, bringing advanced treatments to patients. Partners include Iowa Health Systems, Mercy Health Network, the Iowa Hospital Association, Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Iowa Medical Society, Unity Health System and Genesis Health System.
  • Expand multidisciplinary research opportunities involving the UI Carver College of Medicine and other UI colleges.
  • Help create training programs for careers in clinical and translational science.
  • Partner with Iowa State University and the University of Arizona to encourage new research collaborations and maintain a diverse pool of participants for clinical trials.
  • Forge new and/or stronger partnerships with industry sponsors involved in clinical and translational science.
