PACEMAKER: Winter 2007

Q and A

One-On-One with Alan Reed, MD
Director, Abdominal Organ Transplant Center

What attracted you to the University of Iowa Health Care team?

I was impressed by the visionary leadership at UI Hospitals and Clinics and the UI Carver College of Medicine, which has allowed us to plan and implement a true abdominal organ transplant center—not one in name only. Aligning the missions and goals of both the hospital and the college allows us to avoid the potholes often associated with traditional "silos" of academic medicine.

What will this alignment help you achieve?

We can focus our energies and considerable resources and deliver care that is patient- and referring physician-focused. The physicians, coordinators, and extenders who comprise the center are dedicated, world-class health care providers and I’m proud to join them.

What types of organ transplants does the Center perform?

We are building a "center of excellence" for patients with abdominal organ failure and hepato-biliary surgery in Iowa and surrounding states, specializing in liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation. Our colleagues in the UI cardiovascular center perform heart and lung transplants.

What goals have you and the staff identified?

  • Provide our patients with a full spectrum of compassionate care
  • Create an organized, multi-disciplinary approach to abdominal organ transplantation and hepato-biliary surgery
  • Make patient referral simple for referring physicians and the evaluation process simple and streamlined for our patients
  • Continue the outstanding clinical outcomes for which this hospital is known
