New home for UI College of Public Health

Construction is expected to begin this spring on a $47.7 million building that will consolidate academic, administrative and student-related functions within the University of Iowa College of Public Health. The new facility, to be built on the site of the existing UI International Center, will be financed by a combination of state funding, University revenue bonds, private gifts and funds being sought from federal appropriations. Gathering faculty and students in a common academic home will further strengthen the college's highly-ranked programs and elevate other programs into the ranks of top-rated public health schools nationwide, said James Merchant, MD, DrPH, dean of the UI College of Public Health.

UI Obesity Surgery: 'Center of Excellence'

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has been named an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence®, indicating the program's demonstrated track record and comprehensive commitment to a high level of bariatric patient care. To earn the designation, UI Hospitals and Clinics underwent a comprehensive site inspection involving all aspects of the UI Obesity Surgery program.

Strong economic impact

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics generates 7,464 jobs that add nearly $371 million to Johnson County's economy, according to the latest study by the Iowa Hospital Association. In addition, employees of UI Hospitals and Clinics fuel the Iowa economy through a total economic impact of nearly $498 million and contribute $190 million in state sales tax revenues. The IHA study examined the jobs, income, retail sales and sales tax produced by hospitals and the rest of the state's health care sector.

10-year plan

An urgent need to increase inpatient bed capacity is the key focus of a 10-year strategic facilities plan for University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The estimated $850 million proposal was presented by Jean Robillard, MD, UI vice president for medical affairs, to the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, on Feb. 7.

The plan, which requires further permission from the Regents, includes:

  • A new critical care tower
  • A new children's hospital
  • Renovation of existing facilities
  • Planning for motor vehicle access and parking to accommodate patients, families, faculty, and staff
