New dean chosen
Paul Rothman, MD, has been named dean of the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, effective June 1, 2008.
Rothman--professor and head of internal medicine since 2004-- succeeds Jean Robillard, MD. Robillard stepped down as dean to focus on his leadership responsibilities as University of Iowa vice president for medical affairs.
"We are very excited to have Dr. Rothman join our senior leadership team as we work to complete the integration of the UI Carver College of Medicine, UI Hospitals and Clinics, and UI Physicians," Robillard said.
In another appointment, Eric Dickson, MD, associate professor and head of emergency medicine, has been named interim chief operating officer of UI Hospitals and Clinics.
Visionary overhaul
University of Iowa Health Care officials are laying the groundwork for a facilities overhaul at UI Hospitals and Clinics. The proposal calls for a new UI Children's Hospital; a new critical care tower and related renovations, including making all inpatient rooms private; and better parking and traffic flow. In addition, plans are under way to create a new ambulatory care campus in nearby Coralville, improving patient convenience and access to outpatient care.
'Rare cancer' distinction
Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Iowa has designated University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics a Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare Cancers. Designated centers provide a full range of services, including inpatient care, cancer surgery, and rehabilitation. Participation in the program demonstrates a commitment to helping patients make more informed health care decisions and achieving high-quality, affordable outcomes. Complex and rare cancers include acute leukemia, soft tissue sarcomas, gastric cancer, and others. |
