Well&Good 2001, Issue 3

The Internet is here to stay

The question is not "will" but "how" people use it

Six years ago, only 9 percent of all adults were online. According to a Louis Harris poll in late 1999, more than 56 percent of adults were connected. Since 1995, there has been a 600 percent increase in Internet use, making the technology the fastest growing technology in the history of the world. Not even the telephone, car, or computer match the Internet's rapid growth.

In 1999, more than 69 million American adults were online searching for disease specific information. That number continues to increase for two reasons—more people are using the Web in general and more people are turning to the Web for health-related information. In 2001, a Harris poll found that 75 percent of adults, or 97 million adults, online used the web to search for health related information.

The diseases that generated the most research include:

Depression

19 percent

Allergies or sinusitis

16 percent

Cancer

15 percent

Bipolar disorder

14 percent

Arthritis/rheumatism

10 percent

High blood pressure/hypertension

Migraine

Anxiety disorder

Heart disease

Sleep disorders

The general public is not the only segment of American society to embrace the Internet. According to an American Medical Association poll, doctors, thought to be the laggards in using technology, actually exceed the general population in Internet use with as many as 89 percent using the Internet at home or at the office.

www.uihealthcare.com

It's been around for a while. Introduced in 1999, the University of Iowa Health Care site is continuously tailored to meet your health care information needs. The latest version of the site, which debuted this spring, makes it even easier for patients, visitors, job seekers, referring physicians--just about anyone interested in interacting with us.

If you want to make an appointment with a University of Iowa Health Care physician or clinic, or learn more about treatment options available at UI Hospitals and Clinics, or need information about medical research, the revised web site helps you with these and many other inquiries in a user-friendly way. Virtually all information about the faculty, clinics, and health information services is available through the University of Iowa Health Care site.

The navigation bar on the left of the screen gives you QuickLinks to reach the partners that constitute University of Iowa Health Care--UI Hospitals and Clinics and UI College of Medicine. In addition, QuickLinks gives you one-click access to University of Iowa Health Care initiatives.

The gray navigation bar across the top of the page helps you navigate from one area of interest to another. The yellow "surfboard" navigation bar is designed to help various constituents visiting the site. Click any category and explore the information available to you.

Since this site was designed with you in mind, please share your view of the revised uihealthcare.com site. E-mail your thoughts to wellandgood@uiowa.edu.
