He-e-re's Perky

Perky, University of Iowa Children's Hospital's new mascot, is ready to put a smile on your face. "There is an immediate change in the attitude of pediatric patients at University of Iowa Children's Hospital when they meet Perky," says Gwen Senio, UI Health Care Child Life Specialist.

"One little boy couldn't seem to get past his pain, but when Perky walked into his room, he laughed out loud and was very excited," says Senio. University of Iowa Children's Hospital staff and pediatric patients got a preview of Perky November 11 as Herky, the University of Iowa's mascot, introduced the newest addition to University of Iowa Children's Hospital.

Perky was the brainchild of the Children's Hospital of Iowa Youth Advisory Council. The group is made up of University of Iowa Children's Hospital patients who share their views with administrators.

"Perky will become an important part of the healing process at University of Iowa Children's Hospital," says Senio. "Perky will provide an atmosphere, an environment where children can forget about their pain and laugh.

"In addition, Perky will serve as an ambassador for University of Iowa Children's Hospital, letting people know that University of Iowa Children's Hospital really is all about children," Senio says.
