A Matter of Mind and Body

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's most recent life expectancy report, the average person can expect to live about 77 years.

During the time of the Roman Empire, life expectancy was 25 years. In 1800 it was 36 years, in 1900 it was 48 years, and in 1950 it was 68 years. Modern health care, new medicines, advanced technology, better diets, improved living conditions-all have contributed to this increased life span in the western world.

So who is old by today's standards? Any one over 50? Over 62? Over 70? Scientists define the "old old" as anyone over age 85. Many say it's a matter of attitude, not years. However you define it, age is a fact of life. How you live your early life can play a role in how you live your later life. After smoking, inactivity and poor eating habits are the leading causes of death in the U.S.
