Heartmate ll
UI Heart and Vascular Center specialists are the first in Iowa to use the new HeartMate II ventricular assist device to treat patients with severe congestive heart failure. HeartMate II is lighter and quieter and reduces the workload on the heart by helping it pump blood, enabling patients to survive until a donor heart becomes available or have a higher quality of life if they are not transplant candidates. It is also potentially more reliable than previous devices, making support for ] longer durations of time possible.
UI Institute of Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, and Rehabilitation
Construction of the $5.9 million, 26,000 square-foot UI Institute of Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, and Rehabilitation kicked
off with a ceremonial groundbreaking. The facility will include 16 examination and four treatment rooms, and rehabilitation services, including a hydrotherapy pool. The facility will house other orthopaedic subspecialty clinics devoted to treating disorders of the hand, shoulder, foot, and ankle. The facility will also boast a full array of imaging technology, including X-ray and MRI, that will permit patients to have their needs met under one roof.
Minimally invasive surgery
UI Heart and Vascular Center surgeons now offer minimally invasive heart surgery for aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement as well as reoperative cardiac surgery. The minimally invasive approach offers several benefits for patients:
Less trauma–a single six-centimeter incision with mini-sternotomy
Quicker recovery–many patients are home four days after surgery
Less pain and more sternal stability
