Pharmacy Residency in Ambulatory Care - PGY1 and PGY2

The Department of Pharmaceutical Care at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics offers an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency, with a track that has an Ambulatory Care focus. In addition, UIHC offers an ASHP accredited PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency. Early committal to the PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency will be available to current residents in the PGY1 Ambulatory Care focused track and may be an option for those completing a PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at UIHC. However, a one year PGY2 option also exists for those candidates with a prior PGY1 Pharmacy Residency. The overall purpose of completing the UIHC PGY1 and/or PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency programs is to acquire new and more in depth knowledge of Ambulatory Care. This will allow them to become proficient in patient focused care and develop the skills necessary to become a competent clinician in this area. Overall, upon graduation from this program they will become an Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacy Specialist and they will be able to qualify for at least a non-tenure clinical track faculty appointment associated with a Health Sciences College. Applicants for this residency must be eligible for licensure in the State of Iowa and must be graduates of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy. An on-site interview is required.

This Ambulatory Care Residency provides residents with experience and training in delivering pharmaceutical care and ambulatory care services to patients in the primary care clinics. Residency core rotations include Anticoagulation Case Management Service, General Internal Medicine Clinic, Pharmaceutical Case Management Service, Geriatrics Assessment Clinic, Long-Term Care, Pharmacotherapy Clinic, and the Family Medicine Inpatient Service. In addition the following rotations will be completed during the PGY-1 residecy: Drug Information, Medication Use Evaluation, and Practice Management. Elective rotations in specialty clinics include but are not limited to, the following: Allergy/Immunology, Renal/Hypertension, Pain Management, Lipid, Pediatric Allergy/Pulmonary, and Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The amount of time spent in these areas may be tailored to each resident's interest. Additional required residency experiences include:

Teaching: Residents will have ample opportunity to develop their teaching and presentation skills. All residents are appointed as adjunct faculty with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. Residents participate in precepting students during Introductory and Advanced Learning Experiences. Other teaching opportunities may include didactic lectures, serving as a discussion leader, teaching in the Clinical Professional Skills course, teaching in the Pharmacy Practice Laboratory series, and presenting to medicine, pharmacy, or nursing colleagues. The option to complete a Teaching Certificate Program does exist.

Research: Research experience will involve the completion of at least one major clinical project(s) during each residency year. Selection of the resident project is a joint effort between the resident and the residency preceptors. The residency project is identified early in the year and a final report is required. The project(s) will be presented at the Midwest Pharmacy Residency Conference both years. Publication in the medical literature is strongly encouraged.

Staffing: Residents will have the opportunity to work in one of the Ambulatory Care Pharmacies at UIHC. This component of the residency is to augment experience in pharmacy operations and drug distribution. There is compensatory time provided for staffing.
